YOUR APPOINTMENT -  ESSENTIAL THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

♦ NORMAL HOURS OF BUSINESS AND THE MAKING OF APPOINTMENTS

I am normally available between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm Mondays to Fridays. I am also able to work outside these hours but subject to availability. Any work undertaken by me outside my normal hours of business will attract an additional unsocial hours fee.

I normally see clients at Suite 11, Imperial House, 64 Willoughby Lane, London, N17 0SP. I am willing to make arrangements to see people who are unable to come to my office because of disability or other reasons. In such cases, I am willing to make arrangements to see such people in their homes or other appropriate and convenient venues.

♦ HOW TO FIND MY OFFICE

By British Rail: Northumberland Park Station. Five minutes walk along Willoughby Lane to Imperial House.

By Underground & Bus: Victoria Line to Seven Sisters Station and Buses 476 & 341 to Northumberland Park Station (last stop). Five minutes walk along Willoughby Lane to Imperial House.

By road: Entrance to our large car park is from Willoughby Lane, N17 0SP

♦ WHAT YOU SHOULD YOU DO BEFORE SEEING ME

  • Make an appointment

  • Proof of identity and residence: if you choose to instruct me, I will require sight of documentation confirming your identity and residence before I can give effect to your instructions. Generally this will have to be a current valid passport and some other document like a Council Tax bill, bank statement or utility bill (not a mobile phone bill) to confirm your address. These are requirements of the Money Laundering Regulations 2007 and the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. If you have difficulty producing such original documents I shall need to discuss with you what alternative form of evidence of identity I shall need to see to satisfy myself that you are the person you say you are.

  • If you are representing a company (or other organisation), I will also require sight of documentary evidence of the due incorporation/existence of the company or entity. In addition, each individual signatory will also need to produce documents confirming their personal identity and residence, as previously mentioned and also evidence of authority to represent  the company (e.g. minutes of a directors’ meeting or a power of attorney) and its capacity (normally by reference to the company’s Memorandum of Association or equivalent documents). I make a search at the Companies Registry to check the status of the company and its officers.

  • You should satisfactorily understand the document (s) you will be bringing to me particularly if it is not in English. If the document is in a foreign language I may have to ask for a translation or restrict my authentication. It is imperative that both you and I understand sufficiently the nature of any document in a foreign language.

  • You are advised to seek first the advice of your own independent legal or other competent professional adviser who practises in, or is skilled in the law of the jurisdiction to which the document will be sent. It is not my responsibility to give legal advice concerning the document. My duty is limited to ensuring that you understand the sort of transaction you are entering into and that you are willing to be bound by it.

  • You should be able to provide me with any instructions which have been given by the lawyer who has prepared the document as such instructions usually stipulate particular requirements e.g. signing each page of the document or using a specific ink colour.

  • It helps tremendously if you can send via e-mail (that is if you have received the document electronically) or fax a copy of your document to me before your scheduled appointment. I would want to see any papers or documents that relate to your matter beforehand.

  • Please do not sign or witness the document(s) which requires my seal and signature. It is imperative that everything is done in my presence.

♦ HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE

Many matters are dealt with at one appointment if the document is straightforward, pre-prepared and in the correct format I require it to be. It may take longer if the document is not straightforward or in an incorrect format which would obviously require me to draw up a correct form of the document or make a proper copy. Matters may also take longer if the receiving foreign jurisdiction requires the notarised document to be countersigned by their Embassy in London, a process known as Consular Legalisation. Consular Legalisation may take several days unless you are prepared to deal with this yourself and accordingly attend the Embassy in person. The fees and procedures for Consular Legalisation vary widely but I should be able to provide you with a reasonable estimate of the time and cost.
